Samburu, Northern Kenya
Northern Kenya

Samburu

Arid northern country along the Ewaso Nyiro, home to species you will not see anywhere further south.

About Samburu

Samburu feels like a different country to the Mara. Red earth, doum palms and rocky kopjes along the Ewaso Nyiro river, with the Mathews Range blue in the distance.

The draw is the Samburu Special Five — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and the long-necked Somali ostrich — all northern specialists that do not occur in southern Kenya. Leopard along the river are unusually relaxed, and the elephant herds here are large.

It is hot, it is dry, and it is quiet. Vehicle numbers are a fraction of the Mara's.
