Safari and Beach: The Perfect Kenya Itinerary
Kenya is one of very few countries where world-class game viewing and a proper Indian Ocean beach sit an hour apart by air. Here is how to combine them without wasting days.
The safari-and-beach combination is the most requested itinerary we build, and the one most often assembled badly by operators who route every transfer through Nairobi.
The detail that makes or breaks it
There are direct light aircraft services from the Maasai Mara to Diani, seasonally. Booking those instead of connecting through Nairobi saves an entire day and a great deal of tedium.
If your dates fall outside that schedule, a Nairobi connection is unavoidable — but it should be a connection, not an overnight. We will tell you which applies before you book.
Getting the split right
For ten nights, four or five on safari and four or five on the coast. For a fortnight, add a second safari region rather than more beach days — most people find seven consecutive beach days more than they need.
Safari first. Always. The early starts are much easier at the beginning of a trip.
Which coast
- Diani — the south coast. Best infrastructure, good restaurants, direct Mara flights, kite surfing between June and September.
- Watamu — the north coast. Quieter, superb marine park, whale sharks from November to February, far fewer people.
- Lamu — for travellers who want somewhere genuinely different. Check current travel advice before committing.
Timing both halves
The parks and the coast do not share a calendar, and this catches people out. April and May are poor for both. July to October works well for both. December to March is excellent on the coast and very good inland.
If you are travelling in the shoulder months, the coast should drive your dates — the safari half is more forgiving.
A sample ten nights
One night Nairobi, four nights Mara split between reserve and conservancy, direct flight to Diani, four nights on the beach, fly home from Mombasa or connect through Nairobi. It works, it does not rush, and nobody spends a day in a vehicle they did not need to.

They are both excellent and they are not remotely alike. One is about predators on open grassland; the other is about elephants beneath a mountain.
